6.3 Japan Quake Injures 2

The magnitude 6.3 quake that jolted western Japan early Saturday left at least two people injured, the NHK reported.

Japan's public broadcaster said the temblor caused local train services to be suspended to check safety and the Kansai airport in Osaka Bay to be temporarily closed.

According to the US Geological Survey, the temblor hit the area at 5:33 a.m. (20:33 UTC, Friday) and centered at 9km northwest of Sumoto, which is close to the 7.2-magnitude Kobe quake that killed over 6,000 people in 1995. The USGS initially put the magnitude at 6.3 but later downgraded it to 5.8.

The agency added that the 10-km deep earthquake occurred as "result of east-west oriented thrust type motion near the junction of the predominantly right-lateral Arima-Takatsuki and Median Tectonic Lines between the islands of Shikoku and Honshu."

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake posed no tsunami risk.
