A magnitude 5.4 earthquake jolted Luzon, Philippines on Thursday, May 30, 2013, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
According to Phivolcs, the quake struck at 10:24 am and centered at 30 km south west of Laoag City. The temblor, which tectonic in origin and was 9 km deep, was felt at the following intensities:
Intensity IV - Bangued, Abra; Narvacan, Ilocos Sur
Intensity III - Sinait, Santo Domingo, Magsingal, San Idelfonso, Bantay, Santa, Caoayan, Vigan,
Santa Catalina, San Vicente, Ilocos Sur; Callao, Penablanca, Cagayan; Laoag, Ilocos Norte
Intensity II - Bucay, Abra
Although it is not expecting that the earthquake would yield a tsunami, the Institute said it his highly likely that aftershocks will occur.
There were no immediate reports of people being hurt or property being damaged from the quake.
The Philippine Archipelago is part of the "Ring of Fire", a zone of tectonic activity around the Pacific Ocean that is subject to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
