August 9, 2013 will be a regular holiday in the Philippines, the Malacañang Palace announced Thursday.
Malacañang said President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III has singed Proclamation No. 629, which declares the said date as holiday in observance of the Eid'l Fitr (Feast of Ramadhan).
Additionally, Eid’l Fitr is declared as holiday in order to promote cultural understanding and integration and to bring the religious and cultural significance of the said Muslim holiday to the fore of national consciousness.
According to Section 1 of Republic Act No. 9177, the approximate date of Eid’l Fitr may be determined in accordance with the Islamic calendar (Hijra) or the lunar calendar, or upon Islamic astronomical calculations, whichever is possible or convenient.
Eidul Fitr is the first day marking the end of the thirty (30)-day fasting period of Ramadhan.
