A 9-year-old girl gave birth to a girl of her own in Mexico, local media reported Wednesday.
The baby girl, who weighed 2.7kg (5.7 pounds) upon birth, was born on January 27 in Zoquipan Hospital in Zapopan, Jalisco.
Doctors opted for a C-section in the delivery of the baby due to the fact that the 9-year-old's body was not ready to give birth.
Both girls were released from the hospital over the weekend and in good health. The hospital said it would have to do extensive followup because of the new mother's age.
The young mother, who has been identified as Dafne, was just over eight when she got pregnant. She claimed that she was dating a 17-year-old boy and she didn't realize she was pregnant until the seventh month.
"Due to her young age, we don’t know if she is being entirely truthful," said Lino Ginzalez Corona, spokesperson at Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office.
The teenage boy reportedly ran away after Dafne refused to move in with him and to raise the child together.
Authorities are now searching for the boy to acquire his own account of what occurred between the two.
"We are looking for the young man to get his story because she does not understand what has happened. This is a rape or child sex abuse case," said Jorge Villasenor with the state prosecutor's office.
One of 11 children, the 9-year-old girl lives in Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, a poverty-stricken neighborhood 25 miles south of Guadalajara.
"Her parents work all day and were not watching after her and therefore didn’t realize what was about to happen," Corona told reporters.
The youngest confirmed mother in medical history is Lina Medina of Peru. At the age of 5, Medina gave birth to a baby boy named Gerardo via C-section in May 1939. Gerardo was raised believing that Medina was his sister, but found out at the age of 10 that she was his mother.
